        Instructions

        Step 1: Prepare the Cooking Base

        Place the large pot on your stovetop and pour in 500ml (2 cups) of water. The water level should be just below where your improvised steaming setup will start. This ensures there’s enough steam but the water doesn’t touch the food during the boiling process.

        Step 2: Create the Steamer Platform

        If you don’t have a metal trivet, shape a piece of aluminum foil into a coil or ring, firm enough to support the weight of your heatproof plate or pie tin. This will serve as the stand to keep your plate elevated above the water. You can also use an upside-down bowl if it fits inside the pot without touching the water. Place this in the pot.

        Step 3: Construct the Steaming Surface

        On top of your foil ring or trivet, place the heatproof plate or pie tin. Make sure it is stable and level to avoid any slippage during cooking. This surface will hold the food you intend to steam.

        Step 4: Arrange the Ingredients

        Place your chosen steaming ingredients (e.g., vegetables or fish) evenly across the plate or tin. Ensure pieces are cut to similar sizes for even cooking. Season your ingredients as desired before steaming.

        Step 5: Begin Steaming

        Cover the pot with its lid. Turn on the heat and bring the water to a boil. Once boiling, reduce to a simmer and steam until your ingredients are cooked through to your liking. This usually takes about 5-10 minutes for vegetables, depending on their size and type, and slightly longer for fish. Avoid opening the lid frequently to retain the steam.

        Step 6: Safely Remove Your Steamed Dish

        Once the ingredients are cooked, carefully use tongs to remove the plate or tin from the pot. Allow excess steam to escape before transferring food from the hot surface to a serving plate.
