It strikes a balance between tangy and sweet, making it versatile and absolutely irresistible. Follow along to create your own jar of sunshine that will brighten any meal or dessert!
Total estimated time: 30 minutes plus cooling time
Begin by zesting the oranges until you have 2 tablespoons of zest. Cut the oranges in half and juice them to obtain 120ml (1/2 cup) of fresh orange juice. Make sure there are no seeds in the juice.
In a medium saucepan, combine the orange juice, orange zest, sugar, eggs, and salt. Whisk together until the mixture is smooth and the sugar has mostly dissolved.
Place the saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly with a whisk. Cook the mixture until it begins to thicken and coats the back of a spoon, approximately 8-10 minutes. Make sure the mixture does not come to a boil to avoid curdling the eggs.
Remove the saucepan from the heat and add the cubed butter to the mixture. Continue whisking until the butter is fully melted and the curd is glossy and smooth.
Pour the orange curd through a fine mesh sieve into a mixing bowl to remove any lumps or zest for a silky texture. Use a spatula to press the curd through the sieve, and discard any remnants left behind.
Transfer the strained orange curd into glass jars or an airtight container. Allow it to cool at room temperature before sealing the jars and storing them in the refrigerator. The curd will continue to thicken as it cools.
Congratulations on making your own homemade Orange Curd! A delectable treat bursting with citrus flavor, it’s sure to become a staple in your culinary repertoire. Orange curd is not just delightful, but also multipurpose, enhancing a variety of dishes from breakfast to dessert. Share your creation with family and friends, and watch their faces light up with joy from the vibrant and refreshing taste. Enjoy your citrus creation, and happy spreading!
